Working from home is not as easy as you might think. Working from home is a business, and should be treated as one. Working from home isn't for everyone, but for many with young children, working from home is a great way to earn money. Another advantage of working from home is that you save money on the daily commute, business attire and daycare.
Enjoy the freedom of working from home
While working from home gives you a wonderful sense of freedom, it requires that you can work on your own without a lot of direct supervision. While working from home doesn’t always require a huge investment, you'll need the proper tools for your trade, such as a computer, fax machine, or other items. Diligence and perseverance are even more important while working from home, since you do not have coworkers around to motivate you and keep you focused. You have chosen to be your own boss by working from home.
Spending time with family
Set your hours of work and communicate frequently with family members and friends. Working from home holds the promise of having it all; meaningful work and more time to be with family and loved ones. As for very young children, keep them occupied by involving them in free programs or recruit family to help you keep them busy. You need to establish boundaries and you will likely find times when you want to keep working; but you must stick with your promises in order to keep a happy family. Otherwise your family might start to resent the extra time you spend doing work. When you work from home, you can arrange your job around your family without giving up either.
The benefits of working from home
Certainly, working from home has benefits, the main one being not having to commute, and more flexible hours. Despite the benefits of less travel and more flexibility on the downside there's a new stress of working longer hours. Following a few basic tips and maintaining high discipline can overpower the cons and let you reap the benefits. For me the benefits of being able to be with my children far outweigh any possible problems.
Problems with working from home
Despite the fact there is great freedom and flexibility when working from home; there are several problems with working from home that many people tend to overlook. Many of which stem from the fact that there is little structure and perhaps too much freedom sometimes. When you work from home, if you don't have willpower and can't stick with a schedule you won’t make any money. Most problems with working from home can be solved by simply having a little willpower.
Of course you have to have breaks, and the good thing about working from home is that you can use those breaks however you wish, take a nap, play with the kids, chat with a friend, play a video game, whatever, but you must be disciplined to go back to work after the break even though no one is standing there looking at the clock.
Working from home is not for everyone, if you get lonely easily, are easily distracted, or are a big procrastinator - go to the office. Otherwise, working from home is great, especially for parents or for those who, for whatever reason would rather not deal with a typical 8 to 5 job.
